Thoughts of a Bi-Polar: Part 2

Michael has been suffering from Bipolar Syndrome (Manic-Depression) all his life.  He has agreed to write about how he copes with his affliction.  We hope that this opens the eyes of people who know of friends who suffer from this disorder and will respond with the compassion, understanding and support that they need from us. And for readers who do suffer from this, we hope that Michael’s experiences and his writings help you cope with the affliction.  You are not alone.  Reach out, there are many people out there who will gladly help.

Part 2

There are so many ways to get out of depression. Medication helps to combat mood swings, being busy helps to combat self-loathing, sadness and other forms of negativity. Exercise and proper diet can also nourish the mind and soul. It doesn’t take a genius to know how to combat depression. However, it takes a lot of perseverance. I don’t have any tips on how to constantly keep these things rolling since I often struggle myself. But to those who read this, I’d like to give some of my personal tips on fighting depression.

Tip 1: Do not self-gratify.

Pornography, drugs and gambling would probably be the most dangerous forms of self-gratification since they can lead to addiction. And addiction leads to a deeper and more reckless form of anxiety and depression. I would like to go to a more comprehensive discussion over this but for now I’d like to say  that being hooked on these three things can bring total chaos into your life and must be avoided at all times. Pornography and masturbation is most especially dangerous since it is the one self-gratifying act that does not necessarily go against any laws that can lead you behind bars (it can indirectly do so… trust me), but it alters a lot of chemicals in the brain which can cause an insurmountable amount of damage to you and to others. Smoking and alcohol are also forms of self-gratification but these can be done in moderation..

Tip 2: Compare yourself to those who inspire you and not to those you are jealous of.

Comparing yourself to others is an inevitable act. Everyone does it. It can only be avoided. But perhaps this could shed some light.

I thought my life was very bad until I met one of the richest men in Manila. This guy is a happily married man, fathering five children (some of whom are already married) and is currently the owner of multiple businesses throughout the country. He owned a five star hotel at one point which he sold for billions, he currently supplies coffee to multibillion dollar companies. He also develops affordable housing and he helps people retire. Surely there are a lot of people that are more accomplished than him, but the story of how he started is what kept me going on my worst days of depression. He was living in the slums of the most dangerous part of manila. His father (a truck driver) abandoned his mother and siblings for another woman when he was a child. He had to fend for himself and for his family by doing the most menial jobs possible.

I may be bipolar and my parents may not be perfect, but I had air-conditioning my entire life. I never went hungry. I never had to pay for my education and my very first credit card and car were given to me. When I remember this person and all his accomplishments, I think to myself “I can’t die now… I won’t allow it!” Try to look for people like this in your life. You’d be surprised as to how many they are. Then aspire to live like them or to live by their virtues of success. It does wonders for the mind.
