Sanky Quinto

Anton and I were college roommates from 2000 to 2004, and those four wild years living in Burgundy Plaza along Katipunan were probably the best four years of our lives. For those of you who knew Anton and I in college, you had probably watched our cover band perform—at our insistence—in Angelino’s or in the old Capones on Makati Ave. Well, the band was actually more of a duo, and we would have occasional guest musicians play with us (K-hon, guitars, bongos, vocals, etc.). We went through a couple of band names, from “Karate Kid 4″ to “Bahala na si Batman,” but decided on “Boogers.” It was an homage to our condo unit 12H, where “Booger” was how we four roommates, along with Marty and Stef, called each other.

Ever since Anton made me listen to Guns n’ Roses back in Grade 2, we had pretty much shared the same passion and taste in music. That is, except for NKOTB. Even then, he already had a fascination for boybands. I do remember him having a poster of New Kids On The Block! Haha. Anyway, Anton was the one guy who helped me learn how to play the guitar. He left for the US for the summer (’96 i think) and he let me borrow his acoustic guitar for two months. I bought some cheap song hits magazines and practiced ’til he got back, and then he helped me learn to read tablatures. After that, we’ve been jamming since.

The band was formed on the suggestion of Diane, Anton’s ex back then. Diane and her sister hosted dinner at the condo with a few other friends, and the entertainment was provided by Anton and myself. We regaled them to the tune of our favorite ’90s alternative songs. Diane’s sister Anna, thought it a good idea to have us play at their new bar in Makati beside 78Orange on Fridays, and that’s how we got our break. We played alternative cover songs from the ’90s to early 2000s. To be honest, it never really got to the point where we wrote our own songs because we just really enjoyed playing the songs we listened to. Though Anton and I played for bottomless beers, I must say that there is no better feeling than performing live in an intimate setting for friends who enjoy the same music, and that was more than enough to get us through the two years that we performed together.

With Anton now partying with rock royalty with the likes of KC and MJ, one of the things I will definitely miss with Anton gone is not being able to hang out and jam like we always used to. I think that music is so much more than four chords and a set of lyrics. It is meant to be enjoyed and shared, like Anton and I did. So for you out there who watched us play, whether at the bars, the condo, at some party or even at the park, or for those who never had the chance, I would like to share with you the song list that Anton and I had compiled and performed over the years. Enjoy!
